French mortgages news - The French live and sleep longer

After the news that the French spend more time eating and sleeping than any other developed country, getting a French property mortgage and living in France is more appealing than ever before.

The study by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) found that the average French person spends 530 minutes a day asleep and 135 minutes a day eating. This means they spend nearly nine hours sleeping a day compared with the Koreans who are the "most awake nation", sleeping on average for only 7.81 hours.

With 30 days paid mandatory leave, the French also have the longest paid time off. This is ten more days than the British and thirty days more than Americans who do not receive any mandatory paid leave.

Perhaps because of their sleepy lifestyle, and certainly due to their low obesity levels, the French have one of the longest life expectancies. According to the OECD's survey, the average French woman reaches 84.4 years while a Frenchman's life expectancy is second only to Iceland and Switzerland.

Maybe not surprisingly, France also has the highest fertility rate in Europe with the average French woman having 1.8 children. France's high spending on childcare could also contribute to these high birth rates as public spending on childcare is the third highest in Europe and the OECD.

If high sleeping and eating times are not enough to entice buyers to consider a mortgage in France, then perhaps the low poverty rates are. France was one of only five countries where inequality and poverty has dropped between the 1980s and mid-2000s thanks to their position as number one in the OECD survey for social protection spending.
