French properties are a train ride away so why not invest in a French mortgage?

Fantastic travel links are one of the main factors that make a French mortgage so attractive. Although flying and taking the ferry is still popular, record numbers of train passengers have been seen this year as people favour staying on the ground to travelling in the air or on water. The ease and convenience of train travel combined with the growing number of cities the Eurostar now links to have no doubt contributed to its record high.

Over the August bank holiday, Eurostar celebrated its 100 millionth passenger perhaps as a direct consequence of the introduction of the high-speed rail link between London and Paris. With fares starting from just £59 return to Paris or £55 to Calais and Lille, the train offers an easier and cheaper option to flying.

Simon Montague, director of communications at Eurostar, puts the increase in passenger numbers down to the Eurostar’s new station at St Pancras as it is helping to draw travellers away from the planes.

He commented, “Eurostar is persuading even habitual flyers to switch from plane to train for their holidays and business trips.”

In July 2008, Eurostar saw passenger numbers rise by 16.8 per cent on the previous year to more than 900,000 and they have increased again this year by another 100,000 passengers. With the onus on greener travel, Eurostar may find that even more commuters and holiday makers switch to the train as they go for more carbon-friendly modes of transport.

Invest in a French mortgage and enjoy direct rail links to your door

Eurostar directly travels to four French destinations. However, its connections with other rail services mean that most of France is within easy reach of the train. Travelling at speeds of around 300km per hour (186miles per hour), the trains can reach Paris from France within 2 hours 15 minutes.

With such short journey times, Eurostar has really opened the doors to France for commuters. A weekend getaway in France is just as feasible as a weekend in England and for residents of the south coast of England, a trip to France may even be quicker. Therefore with a house close by to one of the Eurostar stations, you can easily go between your English and French properties.

With such direct and easy transport links, a mortgage for France really does make sense. For those wishing to commute between England and France for business or those who want to escape from England for the weekend, a property in France is the ideal option.
