easyJet to launch new European routes this summer - 13th January 2009
Low-cost carrier easyJet has announced the addition of 14 new routes to its summer 2009 schedule. Nine of the new flights will depart from UK regional airports, while the remainder will take off from European bases such as Paris and Berlin. As part of easyJet's UK expansion, the carrier will base an extra aircraft at both Liverpool and Manchester airports.
The carrier will run services to Malta, Corfu, Bastia, Dubrovnik, Naples, Bordeaux and Athens from four airports in the UK.
From April, services from Newcastle to Malta will run twice weekly, while Bristol will have easyJet flights to Corfu and Bastia, starting from May.
June will see the launch of three services from Liverpool to Dubrovnik and Bordeaux to run three times a week and to Naples four times a week.
The airline will also run twice-weekly services from Manchester to Corfu from May and to Athens from August, as well as a once-a-week flight to Bastia, also from August.
"We are proud to keep growing in Liverpool and Manchester, where we will base additional aircraft that will boost the local economy, create much needed jobs and give even more destinations at our famously low fares," said Andy Harrison, chief executive of easyJet.
The airline announced passenger numbers were up in December, increasing by 7.3 per cent compared with the same month in 2007.
Simon Conn, Conti’s Sales & Marketing Director, says:
“This is great news in an industry which is, for many, proving to be a very difficult climate to operate in. It’s a move which will most certainly be welcomed by the many people who have bought property, or are thinking of buying property in these destinations.
“I’m particularly pleased to see Corfu and Athens on the list as we’re seeing a lot of interest in these destinations from prospective buyers, and both areas offer some reasonably priced properties. The same applies to Malta, which is a very popular choice for British retirees. As an ex-British colony, it’s easy for Brits to buy there, and has year-round sunshine, a favourable tax regime and good healthcare.”
