International mobile phone costs to fall - 13th October 2008
Owners of overseas property may soon pay less to use their mobile phones whilst abroad if an EU initiative to force mobile phone companies to cut international charges is successful.
Using a mobile phone outside the UK is notoriously expensive, and many people do not fully realise the costs until they’re hit with their next bill.
New proposals by the European Commission to slash the cost of using mobile phones abroad could be in place by next summer. The cost of sending a SMS text message is due to fall by 60 per cent, from a European average of 23p to 8.7p. The cost of voice calls is due to be cut from from 36p to 27p a minute.
Simon Conn, Sales and Marketing Director at Conti Financial Services, says:
“Communication is an important aspect of owning a property abroad, so I welcome any moves to reduce the cost to users of mobiles across the EU. It shouldn’t be unjustifiably more expensive to use a mobile whilst abroad than it does at home.”
