Mortgages for France and Bastille Day, the highlight of the French social calendar
If you are looking at mortgages for France, the celebratory mood surrounding Bastille Day may just help entice you into taking the next step and securing a property in France.
Celebrated on July 14th, Bastille Day or Fête Nationale as it is known in France, marks the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille fortress prison on 14th July 1789. Despite the prison only holding seven prisoners at the time, the taking of the prison symbolised the uprising of the modern nation and the breakdown of the total and arbitrary power of Louis the 16th’s Ancient Regime. By capturing this symbol, the people signaled that the King’s power was no longer absolute causing the King and his family to flee.

This led to the beginning of the French revolution, the end of the French monarchy and the birth of a sovereign Nation. The storming of the Bastille also represented the Republic’s three ideals; Liberty, Equality and Fraternity for all French citizens.
Today the day is celebrated by a number of festivities across the nation which includes Bastille parties, balls, fireworks and picnics. Much like on American Independence Day, the whole country is united in celebration and the tricolor can be seen hanging from almost every building in the country.
The main event however is the Bastille Day parade in Paris which involves flyovers by the Patrouille de France and marches by troops, cadets and motorised army vehicles travelling down the Champs Élysées from the Arc de Triomphe to the Place de la Concorde.
Mortgages for France and the Incredible Picnic
Once the parade has ended the crowds will sit down ready for the “Incredible Picnic” which is held in over twenty French departments. Wine, baguettes, croissants, cheeses, meats, fruits and vegetables, desserts and other French delicacies are just some of the edible delights that make up this gigantic feast.
The more steadfast of the crowds then make their way to the various parties and balls which take place all across the city. The most notable of these include The Bal du 14 Juillet which takes place where the Bastille once stood and is one gigantic ball and costume party. Another huge celebration is the Fireman’s gala which is where five precincts around Paris open their doors to the public for drinking, dancing and partying.
